How it all Began”

by Lucien Van Oosten

Show Coordinator

Many people have asked me how this all began and how or where the “Shameless Self Promoters” idea came from. It all started approximately one year ago when I was told about a local promoter, Lynn Hendricks, who was looking for new talent to participate in an artist reception “Glendora Arts on the Avenue”. I met with her and she liked my work, She asked me to do several Arts on the Avenue events over the next year. I soon began displaying my work at local businesses and was interviewed by the local newspapers. At the time I was also enrolled at Citrus College taking painting classes taught by Dyane Duffy. With each success came more stories to take back to my fellow students, who encouraged me to continue to “go for it”.

The art class was filled with a group of very encouraging and enthusiastic students who would kibitz, help and tease one another during the entire three hour class (a very dynamic and fun group). Each time I came to class and told them of my latest exploits and accomplishment they would tease me until finally one of the students, Tracy Pritchard, (a very talented painter) kidded and ribbed me about being “shameless”. “a shameless self promoter”, she said. The class agreed and so it went, the name stuck.

It wasn’t long before I asked several of my fellow students to join me in a wild self-promoting adventure. We’ll call the group “The Shameless Self-promoters” I said.

At first they all thought I was joking but once they realized I was serious, many of them stepped up and said “why not”. There have been several that have dropped out along the way and several new artists that have joined the group since the idea started to take shape. We now have a group of very talented, diverse and distinct artists that participated in our very first show “Eklektikos”

The work was as eclectic as the artists themselves and I guarantee anyone who attends one of our shows will not be disappointed in what is being presented.

Please take time to view each artist page on this site and their works and then come by the gallery to meet the artist and see first hand their wonderful creations.
