Artist Profile
I was raised in the Northwest by a couple of closet artists.
Both maintained standard white collar jobs while dabbling with
weaving and photography. I started weaving while in Elementary
school with a small loom called an inkel loom. I started playing
around with color back then. However, in the Jr. High and High
School I went to everyone could participate in either music or
art. The family tradition leaned more toward music so I never had
the opportunity to take art classes.
At college, I was a Psychology major with a Theater
scholarship. I took a few Theater classes for fun and discovered a
talent in drawing when I presented my first costume design. Then I
spent one semester in Florence, Italy. Like everyone else I took
lots of photos but when we all got our first batches developed
everyone was amazed at mine in spite of the fact it was my first
time taking pictures. I also was one of several students smart
enough to shadow the art teacher that came with us every where he
went. I continued to "dabble" in arts and crafts taking
ceramics classes, basket weaving, and others in a hit and miss way
for many years.
Finally, in 2003 I took a watercolor class through Cerritos
College "just for fun". The first day of class I was
very intimidated but that gave way to amazement and eventually
confidence as the Art majors started asking me, "How did you
do that?" I am continuing to take classes through Cerritos
College and explore various forms of art.
As a "rookie" artist I am enjoying exploring which
media and ideas inspire me. Having no intention of becoming the
"starving artist", I'm keeping my "day job" of
teaching 3rd graders. My interest in art spills over into my
classroom as often as I can get it in. It's fun to watch my
students play with colors and shapes. My immediate plans are to
create and sell enough artwork that I can spend my summers
painting and drawing rather than working Summer School.
